Device Assembly

Biocompatible High-Performance Adhesives:

Diagnostic wearables, like Insulin Pumps (IP) and Continuous glucose management (CGM), are growing in effectiveness and implementation. CGM measures the glucose in blood and displays the date on a reader device. This allows patients to thoroughly monitor glucose levels for more timely insulin injections. Conductive sensing materials and skin-grade adhesives from KRYLEX® are key enablers for reliable CGM skin patches and wearable Insulin Pumps

Biocampatible Sealants

Biocampatible Sealants

Creating a sealant or gasket around the device is a good first line of defense against environmental agents penetrating the device. KH9005 is also ISO-10993 certified and excellent as a sealant for such devices.

Low Extractables

Low Extractables

KRYLEX® range of low-extractable adhesives, like KU5165 are optimized for wearable applications while maintaining excellent adhesion to commonly used substrates. This is important for the effectiveness and accuracy of the device to give the right output – especially in sensor assembly.

Ancillary Bond Points

Ancillary Bond Points

KB3906 and KM9904 offer best-in-class elongation for flexible assemblies. They are certified to ISO10993-5 for cytotoxicity. They retain excellent strength after accelerated aging and are resistant to many forms of sterilization including E-beam, gamma, ethylene oxide (EtO).

THE IMPORTANCE OF LOW EXTRACTABLES

Whether it is a continuous glucose monitor or smart watch, technology is getting closer to the human body and therefore increasing the importance of the biocompatibility of the material selection. Chemence® is the leader in designing safe, biocompatible adhesives. Our KRYLEX® range of low-extractable adhesives, like KU5165 are optimized for wearable applications. KH9005 is also ISO-10993 certified and excellent as a sealant for such devices.

The picture on the left depicts a device constructed using tradition assembly adhesives. Those adhesives typically have known skin irritants in them like IBOA and DMA. Over the course of time, these leach out of the device and penetrate the dermis of the human skin. This can cause contact dermatitis, skin irritation or other allergic reactions. Creating a sealant or gasket around the device is a good first line of defense, but on a daily basis wearables are subject to many materials that can breakdown and erode adhesives; sunscreen, moisturizer, hot water, DEET, mineral oil and many more. The best course of action is to use the KRYLEX® line of low-extractable adhesives that minimize unwanted leachables getting in contact with the user.
